If you are someone that describes your skin type as being combination (like me) or oily, you might be looking for a skin care routine that helps to keep oil at bay, or that even eliminates it. Through trial and experimentation over the years, I have found an oil control skincare routine that works to significantly reduce my oil production. Everyones skin is different, so these products may not work for you, but it does not hurt to give them a try! This routine features very few products, and nearly all are affordable. You can use these skin care products as your sole routine, or you can add on other items, as desired. All of these products will layer nicely with other items and makeup. Whether you want to go for a skincare only day or makeup, this is a solid routine. These products do not mattify, but you will be left with a healthy glow rather than a greasy shine. If you choose to layer on matte makeup products, you should not have to worry about looking dry.

Start With Serum
To begin this oil control skincare routine, you should start with a freshly washed face, which is always step one to any routine. Then, apply products from lightest to heaviest. Serum is the lightest, so it gets applied first. After I cleanse and tone I go in with the elf Oil Control Pore Minimizing Serum. I recommend only applying a small amount to the areas that need it. Please note that it runs out of the tube quickly! You can rub this into the skin and it will absorb and dry down in about a minute. This product really does make a difference with oil control!
One thing I do want to say is that it does not minimize pores. I have tried my fair share of pore products that claim to minimize, reduce, eliminate, you name it. The fact of the matter is, the pores that you are born with is your skin. You cannot permanently change them or make them go away.
Second is another serum. I recommend incorporating a hyaluronic acid serum both day and night if you want the best oil control skincare routine. You should put this on after the elf serum. Do not forget, good skincare means giving each product time to absorb into the skin while working in steps. You cannot rush these things!
As far as I can tell, hyaluronic acid is what it is. So many brands have their own serum, but they all seem to perform the same. I am currently using the Yeouth Hyaluronic Acid Serum because they sent it to me in exchange for an Instagram review. What I like about this acid is that it absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving a residue behind. It has the amazing ability to draw moisture out of the air, and to keep that moisture locked into your skin. Additionally, it binds to water molecules. It really is a miracle ingredient, just as the skincare industry touts it to be!
Jelly or Gel Moisturizers
Now that we are done with serums, it is time to find a moisturizer that works for you. I find that my skin really responds well to any moisturizer that has a gel or jelly texture. Creams simply never control oil for me. The first ever jelly moisturizer that I got to try was the Clinique Dramatically Different Hydrating Jelly, and it was a game changer for me. Sometimes samples in subscription boxes really do lead you to repurchases. This moisturizer is forever a part of my special occasion makeup routines. It has a gel-like texture.
Along the way I discovered a drugstore moisturizer that works on my skin as a dupe for Clinique, and that is the elf SuperHydrate Moisturizer. This one has a jiggly jelly formulation, but it applies and wears just like Clinique. Honestly, I love having both of them around. Keep this bad boy in your skincare fridge for an added boost!
An Extra Skin Care Product
To top off this list of oil control facial products, I have one more item that is optional. The elf Oil Control Liquid Lotion is an interesting and versatile product that provides an extra layer of oil control skincare. It is extremely light weight, and a little goes a long way. This product also runs out of the tube quickly. You can use this in place of moisturizer for a lighter feel, or along with your moisturizer for added benefit. I will put it all over the face, not just on oily areas. This product is not necessary, but it works. I know a lot of women like to use it as a makeup primer.

Conclusion
In summary of this routine on oil control skincare, the key to dramatically reducing or stopping oil production is to moisturize and to hydrate your skin well with products. Sometimes those with oily skin think it is the opposite and fear extra moisturization, but that is not the case. Each of the items in this blog post will work wonders for you separately. If you work only one item out of the five recommended into your routine, you will see results. Now, just imagine how awesome your skin will be if you incorporate all five!
