Detangling Wigs and Other Synthetic Hair Pieces
Wig Detangler Brush and Other Tools
I am going to start by talking about the tools that I like to use for detangling wigs. There are plenty of detangling sprays on the market, and you are more than welcome to give them a try. I purchased a wig detangler brush set from Amazon, and it works quite well! Ultimately, a good, yet gentle brush will work on your synthetic hair, as well as on your actual head.
If you prefer to purchase no tools, odds are you can use what you already have. I personally like using a mini Wet Brush because it is super gentle at detangling. A fine tooth comb also has its time and place. Next, I will discuss the best time to use each of these options.
Detangling Synthetic Wigs
First in my tutorial is detangling synthetic wigs. For this, the metal tooth detangling brush for wigs or mini Wet Brush will work best. I recommend placing your wig on some sort of wig head or mannequin so that it will be held in place while you are brushing. If you have nothing to hold the wig with, you can always lay it on a flat, clean surface.
The key to detangling any hair piece is to start from the bottom and work your way to the top. This is in contrast to how you brush your own head of hair, which you do from top to bottom. Especially when it comes to synthetic hair, you can cause permanent damage to the hair piece when you work on knots and tangles from top to bottom. You can stretch the fibers, snap them, or pull hairs out.
I recommend working in small sections to avoid overwhelming yourself when detangling a wig, especially one that is as long as the pink wig that I am showing. Continue until the entire piece is done. Inevitably, some hairs will come out.
Detangling Ponytail Extensions
Second, I want to talk about how to detangle a ponytail extension. As you can see here, a curly number can get unruly in a hurry, even when you follow my ponytail and bun tutorials. I like the wig brush with the looped bristles, or the mini Wet Brush for these.
Again, always start from the bottom and work your way to the top, while going section by section. You can lay your ponytail on a flat surface to get the work done.
Sometimes it is easier for me to attach the ponytail to an object while I do the work. This type with a hair clip can go right on the handle of your dresser drawer, as can other styles.
Detangling Bun Hair Pieces, Small Extensions, Etc.
When it comes to smaller pieces, this is when I like to call upon the fine tooth comb. I use it to detangle hair bun pieces, bangs, and mini extensions. A large or full hair extension section might need a brush.
Ultimately, when it comes to detangling a hair extension or bun, I still work from the bottom to the top in small sections. Doing this on a flat counter works the best.
