After an Instagram ad for a hair removal crystal by the name of “Gladis” peaked the interest of many, I took to Amazon looking for a similar item, and the only listing was the Secret Makeup Magic Crystal. I am providing my own detailed review, as it is hard to find good information that proves whether or not these things actually work. Along the way, I will debunk the myths!

Everything You Need to Know About Crystal Hair Removal

Where to Buy

It is available from their website, and on Amazon.

Crystal Hair Remover Myths

I will begin by stating there is no hair removal methods that are known to cause hair to grow back thicker, faster, or darker.

The product listing for Secret Makeup states that their item will cause hair to grow back thinner. However, when replying to Instagram comments, they state that is not the case. To clarify, crystal hair removal does not make hair grow back finer, thinner, or slower. Consider shaving with a blade or one of my selections for best women’s electric razors. Shaving cuts the hair down to the surface of the skin, leaving a blunt edge that is quickly noticeable on regrowth. Crystal removal leaves you with a fine, angled edge. While the hair will grow back at the same thickness and speed, it may be less noticeable for a few days because there is no blunt edge.

How To Use & Claims

This is a piece of glass that has a permanently etched, textured surface on the bottom. If you have ever used a glass or crystal nail file, this is the same idea! You should totally be having “why did I not think of that” vibes right now! It does come with a suction cup that easily adheres and stays on the crystal, which gives you grip while using it.

This tool claims to gently glide across your skin, leaving no bumps, burns, or scars. The device itself should last up to five years. You will receive a gentle exfoliation with fast, under one minute use. It works by breaking down hair particles. You can rinse it under the sink to easily clean it off.

The directions for use are simple! All you do is apply gentle pressure with the tool, while going in circular motions. Please note that if you press too hard, you will be smashing the tool into the hair, and it will not be effective. Plus, you will be likely to hurt yourself. While using the tool, you will quickly learn how much pressure you need to apply to make it work. This should be done on dry skin.

In order to test out a hair removal device, I do have to grow out my hair to be able to demonstrate. We are all friends here so I know it is ok!

I have several thoughts about this tool, so have yourself a seat. I do want to say that this device has never hurt me. There is no redness, pain, irritation, ingrown hairs, or bumps.

I do recommend doing this over the tub or a towel, because hair and exfoliation residue will fall from your legs. It exfoliates sort of how a nail file creates dust, but nothing to that extent. My legs always feel super soft after use! I like to follow the treatment with a shower to be sure all residue is washed away.

It works the best on large, flat areas of the skin. This would be your arms and legs, plus feet and toes. When it comes to areas with coarse hair, including PCOS hair (I do have PCOS), like the bikini area and armpits, it does absolutely nothing. Really, the shape is not good for those areas. Sometimes I have trouble getting the back of my legs because it is hard to hold the skin taught. It also misses some spots and I have to go back.

The results last just as long as shaving on me. On the day of use, my legs feel soft. The next day, I can feel the prickles. So, nothing is sped up or slowed down.

Ultimately, this product does work on legs, arms, and feet! However, it takes me so much longer than shaving. To do just my legs, I spend about 20-30 minutes. Because of the time aspect, I hardly reach for this product.

  1. I got a similar item by blame. Same kind of results, though seemed to work better damp for some reason. I think I’ll only use it when my hair gets super long for lack of shaving, like in winter. Otherwise it just takes too long.

  2. I bought this and I decided it was a total waste of money for hair removal. However, I found it to be very effective for removing callouses on my feet.
