Anyone that wears makeup knows that there are several methods to wash it all off at the end of wear. I am in the camp of moving away from traditional makeup wipes. In this breakdown on how to remove makeup, I am going to discuss multiple ways that you can effectively get the job done, along with top product recommendations.
How To Remove Makeup Without Makeup Wipes
Reusable Wipes and Cleansing Balms
A lot of people are serious about the topic of how to remove makeup without wipes. My favorite way to accomplish this task is with the traditional MakeUp Eraser, which is basically a super soft microfiber cloth. They are designed to be used with water alone, and they really do work! Of course, if you want to use any sort of cleanser, you can. They also machine wash well with your other towels in hot water. Now, the market is full of MakeUp Eraser knock-offs. I have tried so many of them, and I find that they all work. The levels of softness and thickness vary, but they are gentler than traditional wipes.
Along the same lines of these machine washable cloths, you can also get reusable pads. Again, you can use them with water alone or the other types of makeup remover cleansers.
Now, on the topic of cleansers, an oil-based product will work the best. If you wear anything waterproof or particularly stubborn, you need an oil-based formula. I have been trying different cleansing balms, and I have the key to how to remove makeup easily. My number one pick is the elf Holy Hydration Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm. Why? I know that it removes 100% of makeup fast. When I get out of the shower, I never have raccoon eyes. We have all been there. You might think you washed it all off, but the residue keeps coming. Not with elf! A little bit goes a long way, so the jar will last you, plus it comes with a scooper to grab the perfect amount. It works great with your reusable cloths and pads! My only con is that it leaves my skin feeling a bit dry, which defies the “holy hydration” name. That does not frustrate me, because I know everything is washed off. Micellar Water and Cotton Rounds
Another method on how to remove makeup is micellar water! The market offers so many options on these as well, and the universe knows I have tried more than I can count. I have narrowed it down to number one and two picks. Up front, I want to say that both do a great job of removing makeup, and they do not burn your eyes or leave behind residue.
My number one is the epielle Micellar Cleansing Water. What makes this micellar water so unique, and a true standout, is that it leaves the skin feeling moisturized. It does not necessarily make this claim, but it makes my skin feel like I legitimately applied moisturizer. Since it can be hard to find (I get mine at Big Lots), here is my next option.
Garnier is one of the OG’s of micellar waters, and I truly like the SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water with Vitamin C. This product instantly gives a healthy glow to the skin, with zero glitter. I was blown away the first time that I tried it! Needless to say, if I cannot find epielle, I will buy this.
I like to use micellar water with cotton rounds. Of course, you can use cotton squares, or even your reusable wipes and pads. Also, I use micellar water to wash my face each morning with a cotton round. You can read more in my daily skincare routine.
How To Remove Makeup Easily With Wipes
The last topic on how to remove makeup are classic wipes. I do not own any currently, hence no custom photography. But, I do have two favorites. I do not find that either option pushes makeup around, which is a plus.
My number one favorite are the C’est Moi Gentle Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes. My biggest note is how adequately wet they are. Maybe it is just me, but I add micellar water to 99% of wipes because I feel they are not wet enough to do the face and eyes. These are the real deal, plus they have a textured side for scrubbing, and are thick.
Second are the OG Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes. C’est Moi dethroned them as my number one choice. I admit, I add micellar water to these, and they do not have the textured side. Other than that, they hold their own. Ultimately, I will not say that wipes are key to how to remove heavy makeup, however. I do refer you back to the elf balm on that topic.
How To Remove Makeup Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs:
I am ending with some frequently asked questions regarding how to remove makeup step by step:
How do you get makeup off without makeup remover?
You can get makeup off without makeup remover with water alone! Reusable and washable cloths and pads are readily available on the market that only require water to remove makeup. When it comes to waterproof products, you will still need an oil-based remover, especially for mascara.
What is the best way to remove makeup?
The best way to remove makeup that is friendly for your skin is to wash with a makeup removing cleanser instead of classic wipes. You can use just your fingers, or add the aid of a reusable cloth or pad. These options are better than scrubbing your skin with a wet wipe-style remover.
What removes makeup fast?
Oil-based remover always removes makeup fast. Oil immediately breaks all types of makeup down, including waterproof mascara and stubborn matte lip formulas. If you truly want to get your skin and your pores deeply cleaned without hassle, oil is your best friend.

Conclusion
In summary of the various ways on how to remove makeup, there are several means to the same end. My recommendations cover standard wipes, micellar water, cleansing balm, and the right “tools.” If you are a light makeup wearer, micellar water alone will be great for you. For heavier wear, including waterproof makeup, a balm is your best bet. One thing is for sure- we love to put the makeup on, but not to wash it off! Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.

I was considering getting the WnW Linus blanket wipes but last time I tried to use a cloth with water, I remember tugging and feeling like I wasn’t clean. I suppose it would behoove me to try an actual cleanser, and I see WnW just came out with one (at least it says new on Ulta.) I think I’ll give it a go. Thanks for the nudge!
