You might be familiar with a heatless curling accessory for your hair known as the Octocurl. It is a silky headband with curling rods. The market is full of knock-offs that work virtually the same. They might vary in length for short to long hair, color/pattern, or material. I got my generic heatless curling rod headband at TJMaxx, and I am using it to provide you a tutorial. Along the way, I also review this method of damage-free curling. Together we will find out if it really works, and how it stacks up against other heatless methods.
Heatless Curling Rod Headband Tutorial
What You Need For The Heatless Curler Headband
To start this heatless curling rod headband tutorial, I will go over the materials needed and prep. Pretty much everything is optional except for the curling set. Below is the supply list:
- Curler set
- Damp hair – water spray bottle or leave in conditioner spray
- Comb
You want to start with damp hair. I went with freshly washed hair that was airdrying, then I added leave in conditioner spray. You may dampen your hair with a spray bottle or conditioner of your choice. Going with fully wet hair is not the best idea, as it will take longer to dry. Your curls will not last if your hair is still wet when you remove the curlers. Next, you want to part your hair the way you want it to be. You should also brush or comb it out to ensure it is tangle free.
1. Place Band On Head & Adjust
Step one of the ribbon curler headband is to place it on your head. The placement of the strap determines how high or low your curls will start. For a higher start, the strap should go across the top of your head. For a lower start, place the strap around your forehead. The strap is adjustable. You will want to ensure that you have an even number of strips on each side of your head. For my set, it is four on each side.
2. Wrap Strand Of Hair
Second for the heatless curler headband, you want to select a strand of hair. Pull the strand away from your face so that your curls do not curl into your face. Begin to wrap the strand around, going over and under.
You will note that each strip section is composed of two strips. We are wrapping the strand of hair around both. Continue wrapping until you cannot anymore. Once you reach the end of the strand, place the end under ONE strip.
3. Secure Hair, Repeat, & Sleep
Third on how to use heatless curling rod headband, secure the end of your hair with the elastics. At this point, repeat the process until all of your hair is wrapped around the strips. Once you are done, you can sleep on it, blow dry it, or let it air dry as you do your daily routine.
I find this to be very comfortable to sleep in! Yes, I can feel something is on my head, but it does not bother me. That says a lot coming from me, because even the tiniest thing will disturb my sleep. I also find that the silk material helps to avoid frizz, and the device stays securely in my hair all night. This tool belongs in my how to curl your hair overnight without heat tutorial!
4. Remove & Style
Last, when your hair is fully dry, it is time to remove the curler device. After undoing the elastics, you can unwrap your hair from the strips, or gently pull the strips up and out of the top of the curl. The end result is a tight set of curls that need to be separated. You can separate them with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. I actually use a wide pick and run it through the curls with an in and out motion. After separation, I finish with a texturizing spray. Alternatively, you might want to use hairspray. You may style your hair as you see fit!
I will say, this device makes my ends look a bit dry or choppy, for a lack of a better way of explaining it. I think practice makes perfect, and a hint of hair oil at the ends only might help. My hair does not like to hold a curl, but these last all day. Combing or brushing the next day is what ruins my hair. I recommend sleeping on a satin pillowcase or wearing a satin sleep cap to help preserve the style. Braiding your hair before bed also helps.
Ultimately, I like the look of the heatless curling rod headband on short hair, and I will use it again! It is fast and easy, and can be done by anyone of any skill level. The fact that it causes no damage and is comfortable to sleep on is also a major deciding factor in my review. I am sure that the more that I use it, the better the ends will look. I like the look on me, as well as the simplicity, better than my bathrobe curls headband review and tutorial.
Keep in mind that you can get many looks with this one tool! Using all of the strips results in tighter curls, where as using less strips/bigger sections of hair will produce a looser style. You can get fancy with the way that you wrap your hair around the strips by braiding it.
