Next on my list of inexpensive hair tool dupes found at TJMaxx, I will be doing a Sleepy Tie tutorial. This is a tool that resembles a giant silk scrunchie. It is made to be worn overnight in hair that is already styled (blowout, curls, etc.) to preserve the style for the next day. While I will test it for preserving a style, I am going to push it to the limit to see if it can be used to curl hair. I am skeptical about it working appropriately on my hair type and length.

Sleepy Tie At A Glance

• Designed to extend a hairstyle/blowout.

• Made to wear while sleeping.

• Best for long and/or thick hair.

• May not be the best option to curl hair.

Sleepy Tie Tutorial

1. Prep Hair

I am starting out this Sleepy Tie tutorial by seeing if it will curl hair. To do this, you need to start with damp hair. You can use a water spray bottle or leave in conditioner spray.

2. Place On Head

Second, make a ponytail on the top of your head. Then, place the Sleepy Tie around it. The part of the Sleepy Tie that looks like an actual hair scrunchie should be at the back of your head.

3. Wrap Hair

Third, wrap your pony tail around the front part of the tool.

4. Secure

Now, we need to secure it. Grab the scrunchie part and wrap it around the entire tool. The instructions from the company are very confusing in my opinion. Think of this step like you are making a ponytail where you wrap the hair tie around twice. Imagine one wrap is already done. Take the scrunchie and make that figure eight shape to wrap it around.

5. Remove & Style

Get ready for the Sleepy Tie before and after when I remove it. My hair was looking pretty crazy! I did not achieve any curls, but I do have some sort of wave or body, and somewhat of a blowout effect. I did not want to use a brush, as that would destory the style. As time went on, I kept using my fingers to arrange my hair and I finally got it to a point that I liked it tucked behind my ears.

If you are looking to curl your hair, I believe that the Sleepy Tie for short hair is not a good idea. If your hair is longer, and potentially thicker, I believe it would give large, beachy waves.

Second Trial

I am now doing a second Sleepy Tie tutorial for its intended purpose of preserving a style. You can see what my hair looked like about two to three hours after doing my Curlformers tutorial. I lost most of the curls. I gathered my hair on top of my head by using my fingers only and secured the ponytail with a silk scrunchie. The process is the same to wrap the hair and secure it. There is a small section that the back of my head that is too short to go up into the ponytail. I twisted it and secured it to the back of my head with bobby pins.

The results in the morning look highly similar to the before, so my overall Sleepy Tie review is that it works for its intended purpose of presvering a style. I still think it is not the best on short, fine hair. On Amazon I found some knock-offs that have a much thinner band. I would love to try that for curling! The tool is easy to use and it does not add any weight, nor is it painful. You do not notice it at all when you are sleeping. It is fast to use so it is not an undertaking to add it to your routine.

Conclusion

In summary of this Sleepy Tie tutorial, when you get past the confusing instructions provided by the company, you have a tool that is easy to use without taking up too much time. It is effective at preserving your style, but perhaps not the best for curling your hair. You will get the best results for long hair. The more that you have to wrap around the tool, the better. I am the wrong candidate to give the test, but results are still evident. Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.
