White Liner At A Glance
• Creates the illusion of volume and fullness.
• Plumps without invasive lip fillers.
• Allows you to see the true shade of your lip color.
• Emphasizes natural lip contours.
If you are afraid, confused, or otherwise intimidated by the thought of white lip liner I am going to change your mind! Here I am explaining the purpose and techniques with real-life examples.
The Point of White Lip Liner
The point of white lip liner is to temporarily create the illusion of lips that are full, plumped, and voluminous. It also emphasizes your natural contours and makes your lips more prominent. If you have been seeking a plumping effect but do not want to have any cosmetic procedures, white liners are a great non-invasive option.
What Lip Liner Is
Additionally, the purpose of white lip liner is to prevent feathering and smudging of your lip color. This enables you to get a clean, crisp look that stays neatly in place. While all lip liners function in this way, white is incredibly helpful for dark shades and bold reds.
Lip Liner Steps
To get the most out of your lip liner and overall lip look, start by exfoliating the lips. Next, apply a light touch of lip balm to moisturize. You need just enough that you can layer the color over without slipping and sliding. Go in with your white liner, then finish with your lip color.
White Liner Techniques
Next, I am covering five ways on how to use white lip liner. For these demonstrations I will be using the Nyx Line Loud Lip Liner in Gimme Drama. You can use your favorite, but, Nyx is highly affordable.
For my color demonstrations, I am featuring elf O FACE Satin Lipstick in Untamed and elf Cream Glide Lip Liner in Plum & Get It. These colors are bold enough for you to see the differences. I have an elf O FACE Satin Lipstick review if you would like to see all of the shades in action.
Below is my natural lips, along with how they look with just the elf products.
Overlining
The most classic way to use white lip liner is simply to line the lips. A slight overline helps with the illusion of volume and plumpness.
In The Center
Apply your white lip liner only in the center of your lips for a full look.
Base
When you cover your lips in white liner as a base color, it will enable you to see the true vibrance of your lip color. Your natural lip color actually alters the original shade. White is the best color enhancer!
Ombre
You can blend the white with your lip color to acheive a two-tone ombre effect. The white acts as your transition color.
Mistake Corrector
White liner can be used as a mistake corrector to tidy up an uneven area. Reds and deep, bold colors are especially tricky to keep even and ‘in the lines.’ I recommend my list of the best bright red lipstick to help you find your shade, then you can pair it with white liner.
Cupid’s Bow Highlight
Finally, you can gently pat white liner onto your cupids bow to act as a matte highlight.

I didn’t even know there was white lip liner! Interesting article, maybe I’ll try it sometime. Do you think it’d work w/lip gloss or only lipstick?
I don’t recommend using it with lip gloss. Lip gloss is too sheer, which would show the white liner (unless you want that look). It’s best with lipstick due to the full coverage nature.
