A minimal makeup or or no-makeup makeup look is highly trendy, and the brand aims to please. Here I am giving a full review and swatches on elf Glossy Lip Stain. It has been a while since elf has tried out a stain, and we all want to know if this new and improved version and format is worth your dollar.
Details & Claims
First, if you are wondering where to buy this glossy tint, elf’s website is the best route for access to all eight shades. Target offers seven shades, while Ulta has four. I have not personally found this line in any stores around where I live. As you know, the price of drugstore makeup fluctuates by retailer, but these sell for $6 each, on average.
In short, these should be long-wearing, comfortable lip stains that provide a sheer pop of color, along with a subtle gloss effect.
To expand on these notes, the one-step application features a unique gloss-to-stain finish that is comfortable, lightweight, and non-drying. The formula should be buildable to leave your lips looking and feeling fresh, plus there should be no transfer.
Swatches & Shades
We can see a clear distinction between all eight shades. The applicator is easy to work with, but spreading the product on my arm makes them look a bit streaky. Please rest assured that these products are not streaky on the lips! Washing the swatches off of my arm did leave a stain behind, but some gentle work with micellar water got it all off without the use of oil-based makeup remover. Here are all of the shades:
- Basic Beige
- Pinkies Up
- Spicy Sienna
- Cinnamon Dreamz
- Fiery Red
- Berry Queen
- Coral Cutie
- Power Mauves

Review
Now it is time for my eview! I want to start of by highlighting the formula. It is lightweight and moussey, which means it is highly comfortable and moisturizing on the lips. The sheer wash of color is a bit more pigmented than you may expect, delivering more of a low-medium level of coverage. The shine is more subtle than a lip gloss. Ultimately, these have more pigment and less shine than a gloss, and there is zero sticky feeling. In fact, they almost feel like a lip oil, and you can build them up.
elf’s claim that these will not transfer is completely bogus. You should fully expect the glossy layer to wear off naturally during the day, as that is what leaves the tint or stain behind. The stain itself is what clings to the lips with little to no transfer until it is time to wash off your makeup.
You should be able to wash these off with your makeup remover of choice. A makeup wipe or micellar water works great for me without staining. You can always opt for an oil-based makeup remover if your lip color is being stubborn.
Overall, I give this elf lip stain review two thumbs up. The product performs as expected and it is a perfect lip stain. You can always pair these with lip liner, lipstick such as the elf Srsly Satin Lipstick line, or any other lip color!

Shop The Lippies
These are great for those in the market for a drugstore stain. I enjoy them much more than the felt-tip lip stain markers that elf had several years ago! The shade range is a lovely, modern assortment of must-haves. This product feels and looks great on the lips and gradually wears away to leave you with a long-lasting stain. I know many like to layer these up over other lippies to enjoy the medium coverage and subtle shine even more, and I approve! Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.
