Even if you are not familiar with the term “skinimalism,” you can probably realize that the word looks a lot like “minimalism,” which is the point. The skinimalism trend was born in 2021 as a skincare concept. We are all guilty of applying too many skincare products and really piling the layers on. This concept is about using only a few essential items, containing great ingredients. It also spills over into makeup! When we think about skinimalism makeup, it is about using as many products as possible that also contain skincare benefits. This is basically for a no-makeup-makeup look, getting that minimal coverage and healthy skin aesthetic. Here I am going to take you through a fast and affordable skinimalism routine for makeup, and I will detail the key ingredients in my recommendations.

Before we get into the skinimalism products, I recommend that you open my blog post about wet n wild 2022 new products in another tab and bookmark it. Those releases really promote skincare in makeup and a sheer look. I have a detailed review on all of those items, so I will not go too in-depth here.

Primers

We will start with primer. Even though the idea here is a light makeup look that lets your imperfections and texture shine through, we still want our makeup to last as long as possible.

The wet n wild primefocus Pore Minimizing Primer Serum contains Bakuchiol to improve skin’s texture, and dragonfruit extract and lavender extract, which are anti-oxidants.

Also, the wet n wild primefocus Brightening Primer Serum contains pineapple and calendula to brighten, refine, and condition the skin.

The Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Primer has cactus flower, which enables it to function as a light moisturizer.

Finally, the Nyx Cosmetics Bare With Me Cannabis Primer features cannabis sativa seed oil and centella asiatica, which are known to sooth and hydrate the skin.

Foundation and Concealer

Second are foundation and concealer options. This is a great time to make use of your favorite tinted moisturizers, foundation serums, and BB and CC creams. I have not had good luck with those, so I turn to the wet n wild barefocus Tinted Hydrator. The key ingredients are hyaluronic acid and squalane, which gives a natural glow and moisturizes the skin. You can really control the coverage with this product, plus it is long-wearing.

A sheer, buildable concealer is a must. elf Cosmetics has two great options out of their entire under eye concealer line. Their Flawless Concealer moisturizes with squalane, while their Flawless Brightening Concealer contains hyaluronic acid and Vitamin C.

Setting Spray

Third are some setting spray options. wet n wild has two that can function as both primer and setting spray, while being packed with nutrients. The Take Your Vitamins Super Nutrient Face Mist contains Vitamins C, B5, B3, and F which are known to soothe, brighten, and moisturize.

Alternatively, the wet n wild Fight Dirty Detox Setting Spray features chamomile extract, witch hazel, vegetable collagen, tea tree extract, and eucalyptus oil to promote fresh, toned, and hydrated skin.

Powder

Fourth are setting powders. All of these are lightweight, will fully set your makeup, but they will not add much coverage. Two will give a soft glow to the skin. My recommendations are:

Brows

Fifth are brow products. Your best bet here is a super skinny brow pencil! Good pencils will add light, hair-like strokes to help you shape and fill, and most brands have them. I recommend following-up with a clear brow gel that adds soft and flexible hold. I am sorry that my wet n wild pencil is not featured in the image, as I have lost mine. Here are my recommendations:

Bronzer, Blush, Highlighter

Next are bronzer, blush, and highlighter picks. Bronzer and highlighter are totally optional here, but I think blush is necessary to give a natural flush and really make people wonder if you are wearing makeup or not.

If you are going to opt for bronzer, aim for one with a light tone for the slightest hint of warmth on the skin. Benefit Hoola Lite Bronzer is great, as is Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer in Light Bronzer.

The best way to get blush that looks natural and fresh on the skin is to opt for a liquid or a cream. Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Dewy Elixir Blush is super sheer, and it contain the natural anti-oxidant ingredients of cranberry and blueberry.

For a more expensive option, you can opt for Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush.

If you do want some highlighter, something with buildable shine and a soft touch is necessary. While there are many examples out there, you can keep it simple with Physicians Formula Rose All Day Petal Glow or Benefit Dandelion Twinkle Powder Highlighter.

Eye Products

Here are my picks for the eyes! Eyes are super versatile. Some things you can do is apply bronzer in the crease, and maybe a shimmer shadow on the eyelid. Eyeliner is completely optional, but a soft pencil, especially in brown, can look very nice.

I am recommending being completely minimal by grabbing a single eyeshadow stick and applying it to the eyelid. You cannot go wrong with the elf No Budge Shadow Stick line, which offers 12 lovely colors. I already have a No Budge Eyeshadow review.

Mascara is also optional. You can tone yours down by opting for a brown or clear option. I am using Nyx On The Rise Volume Liftscara only because that is the current mascara that I am working on.

Lips

Just like with the eyes, you can do SO much with lips! A sheer wash of color, especially one that is close to the natural tone of your lips, is a superior way to stay minimalistic. elf Cosmetics offers several tinted lip balms that feel great on the lips, add a sheer tint, and lovely shine:

I already have detailed reviews of Sheer Slick Lipstick, Ride or Die Lip Balm, and Hydrating Core balms with swatches for you. wet n wild also offers three shades of So Pouty Lip Gloss Balm, which soothe and plump with hyaluronic acid and vegetable collagen.

If lip gloss is more your style (which you can pair with all of these options), wet n wild’s classic megaslicks Lip Gloss comes at you with hyaluronic acid, collagen, sunflower oil, and Vitamin E for conditioning and moisturizing benefits.

Skinimalism Makeup Look

I am ending with a makeup look featuring many of these products. They achieve the goal of not being full-coverage, providing skincare benefits, and making the skin look fresh and healthy. Here is what I am wearing:

Skinimalism Trend Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs:

I am ending with some frequently asked questions about doing skinimalism:

How do you do skinimalism?

You do skinimalism by applying a minimal amount of skincare products to the skin. Simply apply what you need in a reasonable amount. You can take the trend further by applying light makeup products that contain skincare benefits.

What is skinimalism?

Skinimalism is derived from the term “minimalism” which means less is more with your skincare. Instead of piling products on, you use only a few that are absolutely needed in your routine.

Conclusion

In summary of this skinimalism makeup routine, we can all benefit from embracing the no-makeup-makeup look. The goal here is to let blemishes, imperfections, and texture have its moment. Light coverage makeup is the key to achieving the goal. The makeup products that you use should contain skincare benefits so that you get real effects, while looking healthy. You can definitely pair this routine up with your minimalistic skincare for the ultimate effect. Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.

Will you be embracing your real skin?
