It is hard to believe that the first Play! box of the year is arriving. It feels like just last week that we unboxed the December box. While this is yet another interruption in our regularly scheduled programming, let’s chat about this Play! by Sephora January 2017 review while it is still relevant. I am curious to see what the new year will bring us in this first box. This month’s theme is Beauty, Set, Go.

The bag is totally different this time around. It has a sporty/athletic feel. The back of the bag is mesh, which gives me an accidental peek at the products. The rest of the bag is not canvas, rather, a plastic-feeling fabric. It overall feels very “cheap.”

Amore Pacific Color Control Cushion Compact

The first item in my Play! by Sephora January 2017 review is Amore Pacific’s Color Control Cushion Compact, containing two cream color correctors and a super-soft sponge. The CC creams claim to hydrate and protect with buildable, weightless coverage. You are to use the sponge to pat one of the creams all over the face, then blend. Shade 104 Tan Blush can be used to brighten the under eye area if your skin tone is darker. Shade 106 Almond Blush can subtly contour the cheekbones if your skin tone is lighter. The included sheet also states that neither of these colors may be a suitable match for your skin tone, but Sephora can match you up.

Ouai Haircare Treatment Masque

Second is Ouai’s Treatment Mask. Immediately under the light I can see that the tube is extremely less than half full, which is aggravating. This product claims to help damaged hair by making it smooth and soft. You apply it to your hair 5-10 minutes before your shower, and rise it out. It can be used as needed. It looks and smells like a runny white shampoo. A warning here- it comes out of the tube very fast!

Tarte Frixxxtion Stick

Third is Tarte’s Frixxtion Stick and it is not like anything I have tried before. It is a twist-up gel face cleanser that turns into a lather that washes away impurities. You swipe it onto your damp face in circular motions, massage it with your fingers, and rinse. It is to be used two to three times per week. It is a black gel with no scent.

Youth to the People Kale + Spinach + Hylauronic Acid Age Prevention Cream

Fourth is Youth to the People’s Kale/Spinach/Hylauronic Acid anti-aging cream. This is a whipped, lightweight cream that restores skin and delivers antioxidants. The directions state to apply it to the face or neck in the morning or night. Kale is supposed to eliminate free radicals, while spinach slows the signs of aging, and green tea protects against sun damage. This is a white cream with no scent.

Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey

Next is a best-selling lip product that has been around for years, says Sephora. Clinique’s Almost Lipstick is a cross between a lipstick and a lipgloss, which delivers sheer color with a glossy finish. I say the swatch lives up to this claim. I am not a fan of sheer lip colors, unless I am going for a quick no-makeup look. Also, the lipstick snapped in half at the base of the bullet during swatching. Overall, I am not impressed.

Tory Burch Love Relentlessly

The final item in my Play! by Sephora January 2017 review is Tory Burch’s Love RelentlessIy perfume. So far I am digging it as it smells very feminine and romantic. The floral notes really hit you at first, but it mellows out. The scents include flowers, pink pepper, orris root, and patchouli. I actually am sampling this right before taking a shower, and I am noting that the scent has survived a full washing! The staying power is blowing me away and making me want to purchase a bigger size.

My overall summary of this Play! by Sephora January 2017 review is that I wish there are more cosmetics and less skincare items, as this is a Sephora box, and I connote Sephora with makeup. In addition, I feel as though subscription boxes lately have been all about skincare, and now I have way too many facial creams and cleansers to use up. However,I am not disappointed and will use these samples. What do you think of this month’s box? Let me know in the comments. Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.
