You do not need me to tell you that there are so many blending sponges at the drugstore, and they look similar, for the most part. I know a lot of people want to hear about the elf Total Face Sponge vs. Real Techniques, as they mirror each other in all ways. I am doing a head-to-head comparison review to debunk which sponge is the best, but the results might surprise you! I will compare them against their claims, blendability, feel, expansion when wet, and how easily they clean.
elf vs. Real Techniques Sponge
I wanted to start by saying that my sponges have odd indents because I keep them stored in decorative holders. Further, my elf sponge is not the typical deep pink because it comes from a gift set.
Real Techniques has faced some conspiracy over their sponge in recent years. Customers swear up and down that RT changed the formula, yet the company says it is not true. I still have their “old” sponges before they started stamping their logo on them, and yes, they do seem to have changed. The “new” sponge is just a bit harder, but overall it works the same and you do not feel like you are beating your face with a rock.
Both sponges do expand when wet and are latex free. The elf sponge is slightly smaller than Real Techniques – the pictures do not really do them justice. You can see that they are basically the same shape. Let’s dive into the individual details for the elf vs. Real Techniques sponge.
elf Total Face Sponge
First is my elf Total Face Sponge review. This shape is excellent for use all over the face, including in those tight spaces and for concealing. It has the right amount of softness and bounce to give you a flawless blend. This sponge is elf’s attempt to compete with all other drugstore blending sponges, and they absolutely do. You can catch more details in my blog post where I do a complete elf makeup sponges review.

Rating: 5 out of 5.Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge
Now for the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. This is one of the first sponges that I ever used because it came out way before elf. I bought these repeatedly until other sponges entered the market, which goes to show how much I trust it. Besides that, I detail it in my list of the best drugstore blending sponges. Much like the elf sponge, you get the right amount of softness and bounce to blend what you need to, and the shape allows you to conceal and get into tight spaces.
Claims: This sponge provides light to medium coverage as the foam fights off dead skin cells. You can use it with foundation, concealer, and tinted moisturizers for a luminous finish.
