A nail trend that has picked up speed over the last year or so is chrome powder nails. There are so many kits and offerings on the market today to help you achieve this look at home. I have crafted this chrome powder nails tutorial with the Sally Hansen Salon Chrome Rose Gold kit. This kit is perfect because it’s steps can be applied to any other kit you may try at home. You will be astounded as to how quickly and easily you can get metal-like nails for cheap.

Step 1: Apply one coat of Frill Seeker

Before completing the first step in my chrome powder nails tutorial, you should prep your nails like you would for any manicure. I have an entire post dedicated to my nail care routine for all prep and painting tips. After you have completed preparation, apply one coat of Frill Seeker to each nail and allow it to dry.

Step 2: Apply second coat of Frill Seeker

Secondly, apply another coat of Frill Seeker. Rather than allowing it to fully dry before doing step 3, only allow the nail polish to dry until tacky. This will take about two to three minutes.

Step 3: Apply chrome powder

Third, dip the included applicator into the chrome powder. Using light pressure, rub the applicator in a back and forth motion on each nail. As you can see below, only a small amount is needed on the applicator.

Step 4: Apply one coat of Special Effect top coat

Fourth, after you have applied the chrome powder to each nail, apply one thin coat of Special Effect top coat to every nail. Be sure to allow your nails to dry for five minutes before proceeding to step five.

Step 5: Apply one coat of Miracle Gel top coat

Finally, apply at least one coat of Miracle Gel top coat to each nail, and more as desired. I personally like to apply two coats of top coat. At this point, your manicure is done! Before you admire your work, be sure to finish by caring for your nails. I always follow a manicure with cuticle oil and hand lotion, as outlined in my nail care routine.

In summary of this chrome powder nails tutorial, kits like this one by Sally Hansen make the task beyond easy. In review of this kit, it actually did not work well for me. My nails did not end up looking anything like the package, and not even close to any chrome powder nails that I have seen. The chrome powder looked like I rubbed glitter on my nails. Since this is my first time using this set, perhaps it was user error. I need to give it another go. Will you be trying this nail trend at home? Please share your manicures with me in the comments. Until next time, continue to let your true beauty shine.

  1. I have this set, but the special effects top coat is turning solid/gelly ish, and it won’t work. What do I do?

    1. The first thing I would try is adding a few drops of nail lacquer thinner. However, the formula itself may be going bad and cannot be recovered. I use the Orly Nail Lacquer Thinner.
