This year the summer 2020 fashion trends are hitting us with a different feeling than normal. I know that when you are stuck at home, getting all dressed up in your best, most trendy attire feels like a waste. But, I encourage you to do so anyway! When you do, you will feel more like yourself, which is an instant mood booster. I personally love sharing my style on social media, which gives me motivation and purpose. You can easily work all of these trends, and colors, into your daily aesthetic. Allow me to educate you on this season’s trends, complete with a color palette that is remarkably similar to Spring 2020. Even if you are not able to go out and shop for fresh pieces, this guide is still handy while you shop your closet for these trends that you invariably do have. As usual, I am shopping the internet for you and providing my top picks that you can easily shop from your couch. Time to begin!

Summer 2020 Fashion Trends

1. Cami & Bra Style Tops

cami or bra style top summer 2020 trend

The first pieces in these summer 2020 fashion trends are cami and bra style tops. I am seeing these things all over the place! Sometimes the bra style tops are a bit on the longer side, fitting more like a cropped shirt. This makes them more appropriate to wear as your shirt on a hotter day. Of course, you can always layer with them if wearing a bra top as a shirt is not your jam. The cami style shirts are often cropped, but they are more sophisticated than ye old cami that you use as undergarments. While you can layer with them, look for pieces that really stand out, such as pieces that feature satin, lace, fun prints, or loosely hang or flow around the torso.

2. Smocked Cami/Crop/Tube Tops

Second, I am seeing all sorts of cami, crop, and tube tops that feature smocking. Smocking is hard to describe, but you can look at the pictures below to see what I am talking about. Typically, all of these tops are cropped. If you are not into showing your midriff like me, opt for a shirt that is a bit larger than your normal size, and you will get more of a fitted shirt effect. Smocking is really stretchy and easy to work with, so you can stand a larger size. A lot of the cami-style tops feature boho prints and stripes.

Shop the trend:

3. Twist Front or Back Pieces

Third are pieces that either twist in the front or in the back. You can also get away with pieces that tie in the front or back, and get the same effect. Pieces with cutout sections near the twists or ties is also an added bonus, as cutouts are going to be trendy all year long. We are commonly seeing these details on dresses and shirts.

Shop the trend:

4. Puff Sleeves

Fourth is puff sleeves. They just keep hanging around this year, but I am not mad about it! Puff sleeves are super feminine and playful. Try them out on a blouse or dress. You control the amount of statement by opting for a sleeve that is very fluffy, versus subtle.

Shop the trend:

5. Straw Accessories

The fifth look in these summer 2020 fashion trends is straw accessories. Now, these are trendy really every summer. You can get away with a straw handbag all summer long, every year, and always look runway ready. I encourage you to step it up a few notches and think about other ways you can incorporate straw or rattan. I like to do so with earrings and bracelets, but a good straw hat is definitely a summer essential. Straw accents can even be found on belts and sandals as well.

Shop the trend:

6. Tie Dye

Next up are tie dye pieces. Tie dye literally comes in all formats! I personally own jumpsuits, rompers, shirts, dresses, etc. Sometimes we think of tie dye as being something reserved for festival wear, or we think of bright colors that are unappealing to most. Tie dye can be really classy when you find the right mix of shades, or maybe a pattern that is not too intense.

Shop the trend:

7. Floral Dresses

You might be thinking, really, florals again?! Also, when are floral dresses not trendy? Well, hear me out here. This season we put a focus on floral dresses that are more full, specifically with the aide of layers, tiers, or ruffles. Generally, I am seeing that these dresses are longer in nature, more-so categorized as midi or maxi dresses. These pair well with straw accessories, as already mentioned, and platform sandals, which are coming up next.

8. Platform Sandals

Platform sandals are popping up all over the place this season. They come under a variety of names. You may be more familiar with the terms “flatform” or espadrille. Either way, these add some height to your look without placing you in a stiletto heel. As I always say, the more straps on the shoes, the more interest you add to your look effortlessly. I recommend strappy platform sandals, but you can also opt for slides, which are more casual.

Shop the trend:

9. Trench Coats

Trench coats intermingled with summer sound really strange on the surface, but these bad boys are popping up on fashion blogs all over the place. They are truly a trend of 2020 that will not die, and for good reason. Sometimes, where I live, it can be rather cool in the morning. Depending on the time that you get up and need to leave the house, it might be in the 50s outside, and more rarely in the 40s. Now, I am a hoodie girl, and I might opt for one of those if I do not go for a leather moto jacket or denim jacket. Trench coats are a great alternative. They are not too heavy for the season, but you always look above and beyond stylish in them. Fashion blogger approved? I think yes!

Shop the trend:

10. Neon Pops

Now we are moving on to neon pops of color. I know that I have notated these before, but neons are another trend hanging around this year. By no means do you need to sport a pair of neon pants or something completely out of your comfort zone. Try mixing individual pieces or accessories into your look, such as shoes, a handbag, a belt, a pair of earrings, etc.

Shop the trend:

11. Denim Skirts

denim skirts summer 2020 trend

I figure most of us have a denim skirt or two collecting dust in that odd corner of our closets, so now is the time to whip out the Febreeze and give them a go! You will be amazed by the versatility of a denim skirt in terms of how dressed up or down you want them to be. Imagine paring them with a pair of heels and a blouse. They work just as well with a t-shirt and sneakers or sandals. You can spice them up with a belt of your choice. I recommend playing with your shirt or blouse by experimenting with how you tuck it in or tie it up. Even a bodysuit plays well with these.

Shop the trend:

12. Bermuda Shorts

Sometimes I do not feel stylish in my bermuda shorts, like I am breaking some sort of fashion blogger unspoken rule, but I know that is all in my mind. Finally, these are having a moment, and I do not have to feel like I stand out like a sore thumb! Bermuda shorts come in all sorts of flavors for you to enjoy. You can opt for a classic denim short, try something with a pattern, or add a pop of color to your aesthetic. You probably already have a pair or two lurking around.

Shop the trend:

13. Slip Dresses

All hail the slip dress! These babies are awesome for the summer with their lightweight material. You can layer the crap out of them, or wear them as is. Depending on the fabric they are made out of, as well as the length and cut, these can go from a trip to the grocery store to a night out or a fancy wedding in a flash. Definitely use the models in the images for examples! Try pairing your slip dress with an evening clutch or heels, or make it more dressed down with sneakers. You can ‘slip’ (see what I did there) those straw accessories in again.

Shop the trend:

14. Linen Pieces

linen pieces summer 2020 trend

The final pieces in these summer 2020 fashion trends are made of linen. I am seeing a lot of linen pants, shorts, and shirts this season, also with some dresses. Typically, these pieces are striped, or otherwise boho inspired. Good news here is that these pieces are often breezy, loose and comfortable, featuring elastic waistbands. These are great for staycation and work at home. You will be on trend, yet comfy in linens.

Summer 2020 Color Palette

I am ending the summer 2020 fashion trends with a color palette. You will note that it is highly similar to spring 2020. These tones are best described as sherbet hues, which are soft and pastel in nature. I suspect you will be able to find many of these colors in your closet already since they keep rolling around seasonally in trends, unless of course you buy a lot of black! Do not worry, I do as well.
